HARVEST FLASHBACK 2023
Another abundant harvest came at just the right time to round off our previous wine-growing campaign. This great harvest was no easy task after a mild, dry winter in 2022/2023, followed by a very wet spring and early summer.
The vines were able to take full advantage of the abundant water and, as soon as the fine weather returned, produced some beautiful, plump bunches! The previous record for average bunch weight in Champagne was 171g in 2005. In 2023, it averaged 220g, across all grape varieties and all champagne-growing sectors! In this respect, 2023 was incredible and totally out of the ordinary.
We started to harvest our grapes on Thursday 7 September, under a blazing sun. Fortunately, some welcome rains eased the temperatures after a few days. The harvest was a long one, lasting two weeks. And there’s no denying that it was again very abundant.
It is rare to have two good harvests in succession, but the history of the Champagne region includes some fine examples: 1982/1983, 2004/2005, 2018/2019 and now 2022/2023. Let’s hope we can keep up the momentum this year!
